Mathias Énard will be at NYU's Maison Francaise to introduce his harrowing first novel, Perfecting the Shot, now brought to English by Charlotte Mandell, followed by a conversation with Julian Lucas.

Mathias Énard is the author of Compass (winner of the Prix Goncourt, the Leipzig Prize, and the Premio von Rezzori, and shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize), Zone, and The Deserters (longlisted for the International Booker Prize, and winner of the FAF Translation Prize)as well as being a translator from Persian and Arabic.

Julian Lucas covers books, the arts, and technology for The New Yorker as a staff writer. His work includes features on digital data recovery and the excavation of slave ships; profiles of Colson Whitehead, Mati Diop, Ishmael Reed, and Samuel R. Delany; and essays on everything from art restitution to the exhibition of video games. Previously, he has been an editor at Cabinet, The Point, and The Dial. His writing has appeared in The New York Review of Books, Harper’s, Vanity Fair, Art in America, and the New York Times Book Review, where he was a contributing writer until 2021. He grew up in New Jersey and lives in Brooklyn.
